To make this work, I started on the top left quadrant on the 150cm x120cm canvas, and painted instinctively, before rotating through 90 degrees to continue painting on the top left quadrant. This method continued for 2 full rotations, ensuring all parts of the canvas were painted initially.
Studied observation of the whole, at various angles, told me what to do next and through looking and listening to what the painting was telling me, it became.
Since then I have realised that this process is called “autopoiesis”.
“Things do not exist until they start to appear.”
Looking at the painting after the point I have decided is “finished”, it seems to evoke a dialogue between human biology and the natural environment. It sits at the intersection of biological form and landscape imagery, perhaps suggesting that internal human vitality and external ecological structures share the same underlying patterns.
