Having seen my Human Canvas work, Martin approached me offering to be a canvas. We had an extensive conversation about his cerebral palsy, which had involved several periods of major surgery to try and correct some of the effects. I needed to understand why he wanted me to paint him. His answer was clear: “Aestheticisation – the act of turning something ordinary into something beautiful”. His words are a poignant comment on the society that makes him feel that way. This, our third collaboration, was the most challenging session for both of us. I have tried to create a strong visual effect without shying away from the intrinsic issues.
